On Photographing Bridal Models
Wedding photography is one of the hardest damn jobs in photography. Period. End of story.” • Zack Arias, Professional Photographer
There’s good reason why wedding photographers are paid huge sums of money to shoot weddings. Apart from the fact, we want to hire the most experienced photographers for a once in a lifetime event there are a series of challenges that conflict with photography. For that reason, bridal modeling is also known to be one of the toughest assignments for models. Yet they are always high in demand and pay well. We look more at the challenges of photographers and the work of a bridal model.
You are most likely going to be indoors often
Most places where weddings and wedding photo shoots happen, such as churches, or indoor spaces aren’t going to be brightly lit. Using the flash is a necessity, however, the standard point and shoot flash that comes with a DSLR still isn’t going to be enough to light the surroundings well enough. That would mean additional flash lighting would have to be hooked up to the camera or surroundings to bounce off the wall. Photographers will thus require a good sensing of the flashes that result from multiple sources and be able to create the most natural effect possible without too much glare or darkness.
As if anxiety wasn’t heavy enough, the dress adds a ton
Wearing a wedding gown, first thing is that there will be many eyes on you, especially if you are on a stage or runway. Anxiety might take its upper hand and moreover, there’s a heavy dress to shoulder around. In fact, there’s a whole bunch of things that need to be “perfect”. These include the overall bridal look with footwear and jewelry, for which most brides even get piercings done for their big day, to look more attractive. See jewelry for conch piercing for related articles. This means that smiling and being comfortable becomes a harder task than expected. Photographers thus have to understand this and be a leader in the course of activities. They should use comforting words or humor to get the model to relax and joyfully smiling as Bridal photographs ought to be.
Consequentially, Bridal photography is best when candid moments such as romantic looks, or couples are laughing with each other are shot. Achieving this is an additional level of difficulty where the photographer has to facilitate the couples to be at ease with each other to churn out the most natural and appealing photos.
There will be difficult people to deal with
Kids are one example, and many other people will also constantly be in the way as they want to communicate with each other, or in the case of kids who are just too active will pose many difficulties during the photo shoot. The photographer has to be patient and of course be aware of such challenges.
For a wedding or bridal shoot, bulk of the time will go to make up and dress up the model to look perfect. Also, something we can never control is the weather if shooting outdoors. As such a need to be fast and efficient is expected of the photographer. With all the other challenges working within a time limit will be the toughest part yet.
Bridal photography is infinitely rewarding when it’s done right, but there a whole lot of work that goes in the process of achieving the high caliber of photos required. We hope you understand the works of Bridal modeling more clearly now!
